Chronic insomnia is an absolutely terrible problem that has more ramifications than you may realize. As you would well expect chronic insomnia typically results in drowsiness during the day, but a small amount of people actually become hyperactive when they go without sleep for a long period of time. This leads to many other indirect consequences of chronic insomnia; those who suffer from chronic insomnia also are much more likely to be involved in automotive accidents. They are less likely to be promoted or given a raise and more likely to be let go from their jobs because of lower productivity and higher absenteeism due to chronic insomnia. When chronic insomnia persists for a long period of time and one does not sleep at all fainting and even hallucinations can occur. Those suffering from long term insomnia also take much longer to recover from illness and injury. Herbal supplements are the best way to deal with chronic insomnia because of their safety, but any effective treatment is preferable than dealing with chronic insomnia.

Natural sleeping pills should be considered before using prescription drugs. While it used to be most medical professional's first reaction to prescribe a strong drug when a patient complained of insomnia, both doctors and pharmacists are more and more commonly instructing people to use natural sleeping pills because of their safety. As the name would suggest, with natural sleeping pills you get a much more natural sleep than you would with a drug that simply "knocks you out". This is a very important thing to consider, because it will be much easier to function the following day when using natural sleeping pills than it often is with pharmaceutical drugs. Also to be considered is the fact you don't have to worry about becoming addicted or dependent on natural sleeping pills, even when used over a long period of time. So when you are having a hard time getting to sleep, even though a powerful pharmaceutical seems like the quickest solution it is definitely not as safe or healthy as natural sleeping pills.

What can be done if you can't sleep? It depends of course on why you can't sleep. Most cases of insomnia are either environmental (room is too hot, too much noise) or emotional (stress anxiety). Some people can fall asleep anywhere, and others need just the right temperature and light levels or else they can't sleep. If the second category is you, unfortunately there is little that can be done except try to get your bedroom as close to the perfect sleep environment as possible. If you can't sleep because of anxiety herbal supplements can be a great help. Although many are skeptical, herbal supplements have real science behind them, and if you can't sleep they should be used much before you consider a prescription drug. These supplements are available without prescription in pharmacies, health food stores and online. They have no side effects or addictive qualities.
